How to Get AI to Write in Your Voice, Not a Generic One

Generic AI writing usually means the tool has no record of how you sound. Capture your voice once, properly, and the drafts stop reading like everyone else's.

You have probably noticed that AI writing has a sound. It is smooth, even, a little eager, and oddly identical across a thousand different businesses. When people say they cannot get AI to write in their brand voice, they tend to blame the tool. The tool is doing exactly what it was built to do, which is write toward the middle of everything it has read. To get AI to write in your brand voice, it needs to know what that voice is, and the voice has to exist somewhere it can actually read.

Generic Is the Default, Not a Fault

The tool learned from an enormous amount of ordinary writing, so left alone it produces ordinary writing. That is not a flaw to complain about; it is the starting point you are given. Every business that types a bare request gets a version of the same neutral draft, which is why so much AI copy reads as though it came from the same place. The difference between the businesses that sound like themselves and the ones that sound like a template is simple. One group gave the tool something to aim at. The other left it guessing and then felt let down by the guess.

To Get AI to Write in Your Brand Voice, Write the Voice Down First

Voice is more specific than most owners think, and all of it can be described. The length of your sentences. Whether you use contractions or keep things formal. The words you reach for and the ones that make you wince. How much you explain versus how much you trust the reader to keep up. Most people carry this in their head and have never put a word of it on paper, which is exactly why the tool cannot match it. Once it is written down, in plain rules and a handful of real examples, the tool has something concrete to copy. A written voice is the difference between telling it to sound professional, which means almost nothing, and handing it a record that shows precisely how you sound.

Capture It Once, Use It Everywhere

The point of writing your voice down is that you only have to do it once. It becomes a reference the tool reads before every draft, whether that draft is an email, a caption, or a full page. The writing that comes back needs less rewriting, because it started in the right register rather than being dragged there by hand. This is the standard we set with the businesses we work with and then hold to, because a voice that lives only in the founder's head cannot scale past the founder. Written down, it belongs to the business, and every draft the tool produces can be measured against it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions

Why does AI writing sound so generic?

Because it was trained on an enormous amount of average writing, so with no direction it writes toward the average. That is its default, not a malfunction. It only sounds like you once you give it a record of how you actually sound.

How do I describe my brand voice to AI?

Be specific and give examples. Note your sentence length, whether you use contractions, the words you use and the ones you avoid, and how formal you are. A page of real examples teaches the tool more than an adjective like professional or friendly ever will.

Do I have to explain my voice every time I write with AI?

Not if you write it down once in a place the tool reads before each task. Captured properly, your voice becomes a standing reference rather than something you re-describe from memory in every session. You revise it when your brand changes, not daily.
